Computers in South Africa

The total size of the South African IT market stood at R63 billion in 2008 and is expected to increase to almost R100 in 2013. While the shortage of electricity and IT costs may influence IT spending negatively, the 2010 Soccer World Cup and the government digital and infrastructure projects are certain to give it a boost.

The purchase of a computer is still beyond the means of the majority of South Africans and the computer penetration is under 10 percent of the population.  South Africa's retail PC segment is estimated at around 500,000 unit sales a year.

The value of South Africa’s computer market in 2008 was at R23 billion. The market is expected to grow at about 10 percent annually and reach more than R36 billion in 2013.

South Africa’s software market is estimated at about R4.5 billion and is expected to grow by 10 percent annually over the next five years. One of the biggest challenges this sector faces is the software piracy, which accounts for 36 percent of software.

The IT services market was worth more than R23 in 2008. The market is expected to grow by 10 percent annually over the next five years.

South Africa has close to 9.5 million mobile internet users compared to the estimated 5 million desktop users. If users who access the internet through their cell phones are included in the figure, the internet penetration stands at about 20 percent of the population. However, broadband penetration was little more than 1.5% in 2007, with fewer than one million users.

It is estimated that the proportion of households with internet access will grow to nearly 34 percent by 2013.
